A minimum of 13 individuals killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
