Sheff Wed Deals with Major Issues, Says New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

The Championship club's current difficulties are seen as a "major concern" and the new football authority is aiming to acquire authority to investigate clubs in comparable cases, the recently named head the regulator has declared.

During an extensive discussion, the chairman, who was named to the position this week, expressed "sympathy" towards Wednesday's fanbase.

Kogan met with four supporter groups connected to the football team recently.

The football club have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in the current year, with the club missing wage payments on several different times, including in last month.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a significant problem for EFL and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.

"The club represents one of the great brands for the English game and recently we have met supporters' organizations.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will permit us to bring Wednesday and comparable cases brought to our attention if they need to be investigated and dealt with."

Economic Challenges and Proprietorship Status

The club's controversial proprietor Dejphon Chansiri suggested earlier this year he would be prepared to relinquish control at Hillsborough, but he has failed to complete a sale with interested parties.

Failure to pay player wages on time in March and May led to sanctions by the football authorities in June, stopping Wednesday from completing any player acquisitions for the next three transfer windows, although those limitations were removed in late summer.

Official's Viewpoint

The chairman stated: "The position was created for the Owls followers, other clubs in similar situations where supporters are loyal to a local institution that has represented their community in many cases.

"I completely understand the team's plight, as I do for each organization that in modern times have encountered failure, or nearly ceased operations, for causes separate from the followers."

Inquired if the regulator could force an owner to sell a club if they are deemed unsuitable, the regulator answered: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the reply is once we collect the information and understand the situation, we will."

But Kogan stressed that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be considered the final option and the oversight body would choose to work with them.

"Our least desirable course of action is start getting involved with an particular organization, an individual owner, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that proprietor to address the issues that the club's facing and the chairman's encountering," Kogan said.

"However, realistically, when you examine the past of the game, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been some owners, not many, but particular people who have shown negligence in the approach they have taken toward their organizations and finally don't wish to take responsibility for the future."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

The chairman convened with delegates from multiple organizations to detail the scope of the authority recently and stated it constituted a "progressive gathering" with a "high level of engagement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if we get it wrong, if the world of football gets it wrong, the significant advances achieved might evaporate swiftly," the chairman stated.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the context of the English game is a substantial accomplishment - we've got to keep it going.

"There's an enormous amount of money coming into football and has been channeled for the last 20 or 25 years, because there are no assurances it will keep flowing into the sport, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on risk and of course, of the immediate future."

Top Flight Apprehensions

The Premier League opposed the formation of an authority because of fears of a negative impact on the Premier League's sporting equality, but Kogan said: "I fully support the achievement and development as an commercial operation of the top division.

"I of all people understand the concern of undermining the Premier League as a premium product of England. But at the same time, if you engage with division representatives after this week's discussion, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, actually, they have been advising us privately they have a significant confidence."

Ideological Links

The chairman continues to confront a "thorough examination" by the Commissioner for Public Appointments after he revealed he contributed money to the political party in the past.

The 68-year-old contributed funds to Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the now Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

"I've been completely open about my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," Kogan said.

"I currently have no participation in any type of partisan engagement."
